More than 40 years ago, Rachel Carson warned of the dangers of pollution and a failure to safeguard the environment. Today, there is scientific consensus that man has impacted the earth’s climate and may be causing irreparable damage if we don’t act to stem the tide. On a local level, there is significant opportunity to due either great harm or great good. This district is home to some of the area’s best but most neglected beaches and one of the nation’s busiest airports.
Anthony Petruccelli has been at the forefront of environmental issues:
· As Co-Chair of the legislatively created Beaches Commission, he spearheaded a major study of local beaches and has sponsored legislation to reform the Division of Conservation and Recreation so that families can families can once again enjoy their neighborhood beaches with a level of comfort and security.
· He held Massport’s feet to the fire by asking the Secretary of Environmental Affairs to require Massport to start a program called the “Air Quality Initiative” (“AQI”). The AQI program compels Massport to bring its fleet of thousands of ground vehicles into the twenty first century, and to switch them to environmentally friendly vehicles, reducing the air pollution coming into our neighborhoods
